The areas surrounding Canning Town and the Royal Docks are well known for their beautiful views and relaxing atmosphere. There's nearby shopping at Jubilee Place and Canary Wharf itself, you can enjoy modern green spaces like Thames Barrier Park – an oasis of landscaped gardens, wildflower meadows and a children's play area.
This area was once the largest enclosed docks in the world and has an impressive and long standing history, which is why it’s had interest from musicians and artists alike throughout the years. Jean Michel Jarre even performed one of his legendary two-night concerts on a specially built, floating stage to over 20,000 people in 1988.
Going out and about
There’s plenty to see and do, with highly recommended pubs and bars like The Fox at Connaught and La Barrique Wine Bar, as well as a wide range of fantastic restaurants. You can enjoy the view over the docks at the Docklands Bar & Grill, sample dim sum at China Palace or eat modern tapas at Tapa Tapa in ExCel. If you fancy something more active there's sailing at the Royal Victoria Docks Watersports Centre, or you can join the gym at Newham Leisure Centre.
What's going on
You can expect to see a myriad of shows, events and exhibitions throughout the year at Waterside Park, including the annual Waterfront festival and its spectacular firework display. You can also hop on your paddleboard or wakeboard at WakeUp Docklands. There's a wealth of exhibitions and conferences at the renowned ExCel Centre - also home to bars, pubs and restaurants and events such as indoor sports and international food and fashion shows.
This part of London boasts some impressive properties from luxury apartments to stunning penthouse suites. In slightly more affordable areas like North Woolwich you can get a studio apartment for as little as £550 per month.
Moving nearer to Royal Docks the prices rise with the view and surroundings. One bedroom rentals across the area tend to be between £800 to £1500 with two bedroom flats averaging at about £2000 a month. You can expect three bedroom places to go up to £4,500 - £6000 a month depending on the location and view.
Houses and flats are more competitively priced in areas like Custom House, Silvertown and Canning Town where one bedroom flats start at £250,000. Property in the area are expected to rise 40% over 2015-20 so if you're thinking of buying, now is the time.
There are many highly ranked independent and state school across the region including Hallsville Primary school and Brampton Manor Academy.
Transport links here are fantastic. The DLR stops across the area including Canning Town, Royal Victoria and Custom House. On top of that you’re only a few stops from the hub of the City, including Canary Wharf, Bank and Liverpool Street. If you want to travel in style you can fly over the Thames by hopping on the Emirates Airline cable cars or go a couple of stops to London City Airport. The landmark Crossrail project will go one stop from Custom House to Canary Wharf and improve commuter time across London all the way to Reading. Due to be finished in 2019.

This is an area undergoing incredible redevelopment, as it falls under the £1.7 billion regeneration project covering the Thames Gateway Zone. It’s already undergone a lot of major works to improve the area including new homes, improvements to schools and public areas, and a revitalised town centre.
The new London City Island neighbourhood is on the Leamouth Peninsula between Canning Town Station and Canary Wharf, it is connected by a specially commissioned bridge. The 12 acres space will be home to residential living, businesses and the English National Ballet.
Hallsville Quarter is the new £600 million town centre in Canning Square and will extend the area to approximately 1,100 homes as well as leisure and retail facilities and secure parking.
